You want to establish the stakes early on, and then up the stakes later during the second half of the second act. Perhaps a promotion is on the line in the beginning, but as the story continues, now their entire job is on the line, or a rival co-worker looks to be edging them out to get the promotion. If a terrorist is holding ten hostages, the stakes go way up for the hero if a hostage is killed, and even higher if the terrorist suddenly reveals that one of the hostages is the hero’s wife or child.

The higher the stakes, the better your movie will be.
