Vegetable oil yields and characteristics

The yield of oil from vegetable sources varies a lot with the crop. The yield in liters per hectare of cultivated land can vary from as low as 172 liters/HA in the case of corn (maize) to as high as 5950 in the case of palm oil. However, yield is only one of the factors. High fat content oils like coconut oil and palm oil are generally less preferred for making of biodiesel.

Apart from this, even from the farmer’s point of view, high yield is not the only deciding factor. It may not be even the most important factor. There are other factors such as by-products, labor employment and other inputs, and how it fits into crop rotation patterns.
