A week later, Bridget glowered at Gran and crossed her arms. “So, Dr. Mayes, you’re saying it’s okay for Gran to live alone and go up and down twelve steps each time to come and go?”

Dr. Mayes chuckled and tilted her head to the side. “Well, she has been cleared by the rehab department. In an ideal situation, someone would live with you, Ms. Wildes. Living alone this close to your heart attack is a bit of a risk. Stairs are okay but try to keep going up and down to a minimum and take your time.”

Bridget shot the doctor a narrow-eyed look, then turned back to glare at Gran.

Gran returned the expression. “I’m going home.”

“Over my dead body. You heard the doctor. She doesn’t want you to live alone yet.” Bridget wanted to shout at Gran, but held herself in check. She knew her grandmother wouldn’t react well to that kind of behavior no matter how grown Bridget was.

“Sarah already said she would come stay with me.” Gran raised a brow, escalating their stand-off.

“Sarah is going home.”

“She said she’d stay longer with me so I could get back to my apartment.”

Bridget’s jaw dropped. She swung around to the doctor. “How long would you prefer someone be with Gran?”

The doctor considered for a moment. “Two weeks if her follow-up appointments go well.”

Bridget sighed and closed her eyes. She knew when she’d been beaten. Sarah was going to owe her. “I still don’t think this is a good idea,” she muttered. “Thank you for your time, Dr. Mayes.”

On the ride home Bridget asked, “Why do you want to go home so much? Is living with me such a hardship?”

Gran smiled and shook her head. She reached over and patted Bridget’s knee. “No, Bridgie. I just want to get back to my home. My bed. My plants. I want you to have some time alone with that handsome new boyfriend of yours.”

She coughed as the air in her throat suddenly stuck. “Jack and I are fine. We have time together.” That was a bit of a stretch. True, they’d spent plenty of time together, but usually when she was working on products for the store. She’d taken to spending hours in her workshop out back. It gave her space from Gran and Sarah and allowed her to keep her business anxiety in check. Plus, Jack had come over several times and they’d made out hot and heavy. Sadly, that was all they’d done. It wasn’t that she couldn’t have him spend the night or her stay at his place, but they’d come to an unspoken agreement that their first time together wouldn’t be with other people just a room or two down the hall.

She wanted to have the freedom to be as loud as she wished or laze around in bed with Jack. And have both her sister and grandmother not know that she was having sex at the exact moment it was happening. There really wasn’t a way to avoid that with them living with her.
