Chapter Thirteen

“Look outside! It’s snowing!” Fallon said excitedly.

Maisie could barely glance up from her tablet to look at where her friend was pointing. She was so nervous about her book report. She had to read it to the whole class, and she was absolutely certain that facing a T. rex would be more preferable than reading her book report out loud.

“We’ll have to build some snowpeople in the courtyard at lunch,” Grace said. “It’s tradition.”

“It’s a plan,” Fallon said as Maisie stared at the title of her book report, wondering if it was too late to change all of it.

“Maisie, are you okay?” Grace asked. “You look a little green.”

“Just nervous,” Maisie managed to say.

“Your report’s great,” Fallon assured her. “We went over it three times! Just remember: breathe and talk slowly. Everyone talks faster when they’re nervous.”

“Thanks,” Maisie said. “I’ve just never done public speaking before.”

“I get it,” Grace said. “I wish we didn’t have to read them out loud.”

“Mrs. Kim says it helps us to be able to verbalize our arguments,” Fallon said, her voice lowering as the teacher in question came into the classroom. Mrs. Kim was Korean American and wore her hair in a bun on the top of her head with several pencils always stuck in it. Her students weren’t sure if the bun kept the pencils in place or the pencils kept the bun in place.

“Good morning, class,” she said. “Goodness, that snow is coming down! Please remember anyone whose parents get delayed because of the storm can come to my room after school to hang out until their parents arrive. Now, where did we leave off on the book reports?” Mrs. Kim checked the list on her desk. “Maisie, you’re up next.”

“You’re gonna do great,” Fallon whispered as Grace held up crossed fingers for her.

Maisie took a deep breath, clutching her tablet. She walked up to the front of the classroom, her heart thundering in her chest. She would’ve preferred to shovel dinosaur manure for a month—no, two months—instead of doing this. But it wasn’t like she could make that offer to Mrs. Kim—unless the English teacher was harboring dinosaurs in her backyard.

“Are you ready to start, Maisie?” Mrs. Kim asked.

Maisie blinked, her fingers tightening around her tablet. She must’ve zoned out! Oh no!

“Yes, I’m ready,” she said. Talk slow, she reminded herself. “The Call of the Wild is about shedding civilization, but it’s also about loyalty and finding your true place in the world…”
