Figure 8.1 American opinion on climate change (Gustafsen, Leiserowitz, and Maibach 2018)

When I was researching my graduate thesis at the Harvard University Extension School, I became engrossed in the power of language and the use of various ideas to communicate about climate change. We are now starting to see new terms developed to describe some of the weather events that are occurring. In a new book by David Wallace-Wells, he develops more powerful words and phrases to describe what is happening now (Wallace-Wells 2019):

Airpocolypse—the noxious choking air pollution in some of the world’s major cities including Beijing and Delhi

Climate apathy—the possibility that people will adapt to the new normal of horrendous climate events

Climate caste system—it is well known that climate change will most drastically impact poor communities worldwide

Coral dying—the lethal combination of heat and acidification killing the coral reefs

Hidden hunger—the decreased nutritional value from plants grown in a high CO2 environment

Sunny-day flooding—such as the flooding now happening in Florida from super high tides as the seas rise
