STANDING OPPOSITE THE sheriff, Clara found him look at her with a sympathetic look on his face.

“You OK, ma’am?”

Clara inhaled deeply and nodded. “I’m fine.”

“You’re sure?” He got up from his chair and walked around the table. “Because thinking back on what I said earlier I think I choose badly with my words-”

“It’s wasn’t you.” Clara dabbed at an eye with her handkerchief and put it away as quickly as she could. She didn’t need his sympathy. She just needed to see Tom as quickly as she could. To see him and hear him tell her that everything was going to be alright. “I’m fine, really. Just had an unpleasant experience over at the general store.”

“Really?” He walked over to a chair and pulled it over to her. “Sit down.”

Clara looked at the seat and ignored it. “I’m fine.”

He nodded toward the cell door. “You want to see him?”

“Of course I do-” Clara answered and felt him press the chair to the back of her legs.

“Well, sit down for a moment. The last thing he needs is to see you in such a state.” He walked to the pot-bellied stove and held up his coffee pot. “Care for some?”

“That’s more like it. Good looking woman like you shouldn’t be going around with puffy eyes.” Filling himself a cup, he took his seat and took a drink before putting the cup down. “So, what’s the word in Coppertrail?”

“You don’t know?”

“I never pay much notice to the gossip in this place. Too many people in this town with too much time on their hands if you ask me. What is it they say in proverbs?” He looked at the ceiling for a moment. “He who guards his mouth and his tongue, guards his soul from troubles.” Seeming happy with his recall, he looked over and grinned. “Surprised that even a heathen like me knows his bible?”

Clara shook her head. If anything, she was embarrassed that he knew it much better than she did. “No, I wasn’t going to say that.”

“Comes from losing a wife before her time.” He took another drink from his coffee cup. “Only for the good Lord’s book I’d probably be in the ground with her.”

“I’m sorry to hear that.”

“It’s OK. Gets a little easier every day.” Sitting up in his seat, he folded his arms on the edge of his desk and looked over. “So, what happened?”

“At the store?” Getting a nod, she continued, “Nothing much, just called a murderer’s bride and a tramp.”

“Let me guess, Alice?”

“Is that his wife’s name?”

“Yeah, a nasty bit of work if you ask me. Both of them are.” Chuckling to himself for a moment he pointed to her seat. “You know a few weeks ago, he
