I wake into thrumming noise, the porthole cover clanging, Maggie tangled in blankets in the top berth. Our cabin a welter of night breath and damp wool.

Antigua is heaving on her haunches, bucking waves hard enough to lift my feet from the flat of the bunk, then my head. The back of my skull clapping the partition wall like a gong thumps me from precarious sleep.

Seasickness reframes me, my limbs like water, my body wraithing with hunger. I clang shins on the steep pitch of stairs, aiming for the aft deck and uncanny brightness of midnight. The sea seems closer than before, gunmetal surface a raft of spume. The door throws my weight back at me: the deck has gone under, vanishing and reforming as water breaks across its length.

The prairies a thousand miles away, I feel my body gone glass, emptying and refilling with Arctic swell. Darkness and safety a trick of the mind, as distant as the long, light fields of home.
