“So, what’s the plan?” I asked, munching on a chocolate chip cookie I’d found in Zelda’s cookie jar. “Are you just going to zap the curse out of them?”

“Something like that,” Zelda said and directed Tyson to lead the two wolves into the middle of the clearing. Both Andi and Dillon followed the beta, seemingly unaware of the rest of us.

“Here.” Sassy handed me a mug. The rich scent of bold coffee made my mouth water.

“You’re a goddess.” I moaned as I took a sip.

“You needed something to wash those cookies down with.” She winked and moved to stand next to Zelda.

Sterling filled her spot, wrapping his arm around my waist. His solid, warm presence put me at ease, and I couldn’t help the wave of guilt that washed over me. Andi was in trouble while I was basking in cookie and coffee bliss. I mean, I had to enjoy the finer things while I had a chance, right?

“Stand back,” Zelda ordered.

The small pack surrounding the wolves didn’t move.

“Fine. Stay there if you want, but I won’t be held responsible if I catch any of you in the ass with this spell,” she said hotly, clearly annoyed with their lack of cooperation.

Tyson made a jerking motion with his head and walked off to the side of the clearing. The rest of the pack followed him.

“Thanks,” Zelda said, not bothering to hide her irritation.

Sassy leaned over and whispered something to the healer.

Zelda nodded, and a moment later, her shoulders visibly relaxed. Beautiful pale-lavender magic coated her skin. And suddenly she was the only thing I could focus on. There was a pull that had me completely transfixed on her magic. Zelda stood taller, self-assured, and when she raised her arms, the magic shot from her fingers, engulfing the two wolves.

Time seemed to stand still as the lavender-tinted magic clung to the statuesque wolves. Finally, the alpha turned his head and stared into Andi’s wolf eyes. The magic started to pulse, and I was sure it was working, penetrating the spell. It had to be.

But then there was a loud boom. The lavender magic shattered into thousands of pieces and as it hit the ground, it disappeared as if it had never existed.

“Andi?” I called, already running for the wolf.

She let out a whine and moved to stand behind Dillon. The alpha let out a snarl and took a step forward, showing me his teeth.

I stopped dead in my tracks, unwilling to become wolf food.

“It was never going to work,” a deep male voice said from behind me.

I spun, finding Mac, the alpha of Asscrack, West Virginia. He was also Zelda’s tall, dark, and yummy mate, and was standing next to her.

“Why?” she asked him.

“It’s the curse. It can only be broken one way,” he said, frowning.

“Which is?” I asked.

“The alpha needs to be challenged,” he said.

“By who? You?” Zelda asked.

“By me,” another male voice said.

I turned and spotted Diesel standing just a few feet from Andi and Dillon. He already had his shirt off and was unbuckling his belt.
