TEA & BISCUITS

Jesse was spitting mad. Hawk had never seen her like this. He hoped the T3s would kick in soon and calm her down.

“You can’t just give me away! I’m not your property!” She jumped down off the table, landing on her good leg, and stood with her arms crossed dramatically over her chest.

He turned to his dad. “Could you give us a minute?”

Dr. VanHouten took the key from his pocket and offered it. “Come by the house or stay here tonight, whichever works best. Lock up when you leave and drop it in the usual place. I’ll be in early tomorrow. Monday always draws a crowd.”

“Thanks.” Hawk took the key and shook his father’s hand.

“I can’t believe you’re trying to pawn me off on your father,” Jesse said, as the front door closed. “Do you really want to get rid of me that bad?”

“Is that what you think?”

“I said it, didn’t I?” She glared at him.

“Look. You could have died out there in the bush. I don’t think you know how close you were. I want you to be somewhere safe and comfortable.”

“How can I be comfortable alone in a house full of strangers? Even nice strangers. I want to be with you.”

“Jesse . . .” He didn’t know what to say to that. He still had flashbacks of that night when Shen died. Could still see her dark eyes closing for the last time. That moment haunted his dreams and kept him awake at night. The last two days he’d focused on Jesse because he’d never make that mistake again. Never let another woman talk him into something he felt in his gut was wrong. And then the sheriff had thrown it in his face, and now all he wanted to do was run.

She limped into the lounge, settled on the couch, and covered her face with her hands.

Hawk went into the kitchen, turned on the kettle, and found some tea and biscuits. Bloody hell. If she was crying when he went in there with the tea tray, he didn’t know what he’d do.

It wasn’t that he didn’t have feelings for her. He just didn’t want them.

Jesse was staring at the autumn landscape over the fireplace when he came in with the tray. He set it down on the coffee table and sat at the opposite end of the couch by her feet.

“I really could have died?”

“If we hadn’t come here, yes. Possibly. Sepsis. The bacteria gets into your bloodstream and causes your immune system to go into overdrive. You had several symptoms. Fever. Weakness. Rapid heartbeat.”

“And now?”

“Now you’ll heal, if you listen to your doctor.” He tapped his chest. “And stop arguing with him.”

She pulled her lips into a grin, picked up the mug, and sipped her tea. “You do make a good cup of tea, doc.”

“On a scale of one to ten, what’s your pain level?”

She closed her eyes and sighed. “I can’t feel a thing.”

“Good. After your tea and biscuits, you need to get some rest.
