Recognizing fruit-bearing trees

Depending on where you live, you can grow fruit trees already proven to prosper in your area. Also consider fruits of other arid regions. In many cases, they’ll need water and coddling to get established but in ensuing years will be fairly self-sufficient, including drought-tolerant (depending on what you choose, your climate, and conditions in your yard).

Your first step, after you warm to this idea, is to visit a local or regional nursery. Walk around and see what kinds of fruit trees they offer.

Then flag down a staffer and ask questions:

How big, and wide, does this tree get?

Do I need to plant more than one for pollination purposes?

How long until it begins bearing?

Do I need to protect it from any insect or animal pests?

Does it need spraying to prevent disease or insect problems or is it possible to raise an organic tree?

Does it have special pruning requirements?

What should I do to encourage a harvest of delicious fruit?

How long does it live?

What are its water needs? (How do you recommend I meet them?)
