Chapter Twelve

The gentlemen closeted themselves in Fitzwilliam’s study shortly before three o’clock. “We shall see you for supper, my dear,” Fitzwilliam said and kissed Elizabeth lightly.

“We shall call for you should there be any proposals of marriage,” she replied, and he merely shook his head and chuckled.

After they were gone, Georgiana looked at her sister. “You do not truly think anyone will propose today, do you?”

Elizabeth laughed gaily. “Not if they know anything about your brother,” she promised. “There is not a man in London who would risk his ire by skipping over the accepted steps of courtship.”

Georgiana breathed a sigh of relief, and Kitty giggled. “La, Georgie! If you could but see your face--one would think you did not wish to find a husband at all!”

“I think we had best leave that conversation for another time, ladies,” Elizabeth said, and they all glanced at the clock. “Let us take our places in the sitting room and receive our guests.”

They were not a moment to soon; Georgiana heard the heavy sound of the door knocker as she sat down. A minute later, an older lady and her daughter—a young lady with the most amazing auburn hair—were shown into the room. “Lady Chatterton and Miss Daphne Chatterton,” Remington intoned.

“Good afternoon, Lady Chatterton,” Elizabeth said graciously. “Miss Chatterton, I believe we saw you when Georgiana and Kitty were presented.”

The girl smiled, and Georgiana liked her immediately. “Oh yes! I do hope you were both as nervous as I was, or I shall feel like quite the goose.”

Kitty poured them both a cup of tea. “I do not think there was a young lady present who did not feel her heart pounding,” she said. “I confess, I was certain I would trip and fall on my face in front of Her Majesty!”

Miss Chatterton giggled. “I am so glad I am not the only one. I practiced my curtsey over and over in front of the mirror, and I fell more times than I care to admit.”

“But apparently we all came out of the experience unscathed,” Georgiana said.

Before anyone could answer, another lady was admitted to the room, and the conversation continued on to different topics. That began a whirlwind half hour, with people entering and leaving with such rapidity that Georgiana could not keep up with names and faces.

When the door opened yet again, Georgiana turned to it wearily. However, the familiar face of her Aunt Fitzwilliam brightened her spirits. Her chestnut hair was artfully arranged to disguise the streaks of grey, and she still wore warm colors, rather than the drab tones most matrons favored.

The older lady took a cursory glance of the room, her nostrils thinning slightly when she spied their current guests. “Lady Pierson, Miss Pierson, good afternoon,” Lady Matlock said. “I trust I have not missed any important bits of gossip?”

Elizabeth pressed her lips together in a way Georgiana knew meant she was holding back laughter. On the other side of the room, Lady Pierson narrowed her eyes and rose from her seat.
