Chapter 10

Addey was about to close up the office and go home, when all of a sudden, the bells on the door jangled and in walked a whole line of bedraggled men. She recognized most of them as John’s brothers.

“What’s this all about?” she asked, meeting them at the door.

John pushed his way through the crowd and stopped in front of her. Although he was smiling, he had a gash over his eye and his mouth was also bleeding.

“John, what happened?” Her hands went to his face – his beautiful, glorious face.

“You’re still open for business, aren’t you?” he asked. “My brothers and a few others are in need of a doctor.”

“Of course, come in, all of you.” She herded them all into the room, not believing what she was seeing. “Were you all in a fight of some sort?”

“Something like that,” said John. “Well, it seems you have some patients after all. Good thing you stayed open, Addey.”

“John?” She looked out of the side of her eyes and spoke softly. “Please don’t tell me you started a barroom brawl just so I’d have people in here tonight?”

“Of course not! Things like this happen all the time. It’s a bar, and we’re men.”

“Well, quickly, all of you step over here and let me get a good look at who I need to work on first.” She started to look at John’s face, but he took her hands in his and just shook his head.

“No, Addey. I’ll wait until last. Take care of the others first.”

“Everyone, feel free to help yourself to cookies and hot chocolate and take a seat on the couch while you’re waiting.”

Simon plopped down on the couch next to James and Andrew, and two of the burly men from the bar had taken the single chairs. Levi stopped in his path when he saw there was nowhere else to sit.

“I’d rather have some hot chocolate anyway.” Levi headed over to the table, pushing Thad and Nate to the side, and reached around Judas to grab the last cookie, but Zeb’s hand shot out and got it first.

“Mmmm, good cookies,” said Judas, sampling one of the sugared hearts.

“My wife made them,” said Levi, looking down at Judas’s plate that had half a dozen cookies on it. “Give me one.” He reached out but Judas moved the plate away, not wanting to share.

“I’ve got more in the back,” said Addey. “And don’t forget about the hot chocolate.”

“No beer?” someone called out and she almost laughed.

“No beer,” she answered.

Levi picked up a cup to fill it with hot chocolate, first noticing the bowl of mini marshmallows sitting next to it. “Now I know what Candy did with all the mini marshmallows.” He scooped up a handful and crammed them into the small cup, and barely left any room for hot chocolate.

“Give me some of those,” said Judas, but Levi turned his shoulder to him.

“Nope. Not unless you give me a cookie.”

“Stop it, you fools,” said John. “This is a doctor’s office not the bar, so start behaving like humans, not Neanderthals.
