THIRTY-FOUR

Marky glanced at the internet print-outs of the various gossip columns Dave had passed to him on Monday. The media love for Mats and Steven wasn’t abating. Instead, it was growing greater each day and the station’s marketing department was now hounding him for guidance on how he wanted to move it on. The problem was, he didn’t know. He hadn’t expected this level of interest but it had been a slow news month and their “Love is on the Air” spot had captured London’s heart. There had even been talk of syndicating it to a few other stations around the country. On top of this, the phones were ringing off the hook as various magazines and newspapers rang frequently to request interviews. They all seemed to be of the same mind – calling often enough will wear down the resistance against them.

Marky sighed. He was going to have to sit down with Mats and Steven and bring them up to speed on the latest developments and discuss what came next. The station owner was rubbing his hands with glee at the attention and Marky knew he’d want to exploit it as much as he possibly could and he couldn’t blame him. After all, the bloke was in the business to make money and the advertising revenue had gone stratospheric. The newly hired advertising director had whispered to him yesterday that they were now having bidding wars with companies desperate to buy the advert spaces around the “Love” slot. The only thing surprising Marky was that neither Steven or Mats had made any mention of being door-stepped by the paparazzi. Having experienced it in his heyday, he knew it was only a matter of time. If the papers didn’t get their interviews one way, they would get them another and that would be more difficult to control.

He glanced at the clock and sighed again. It was almost time for todays’ catch-up. Just one more – very highly priced – advert to go and then Mats and Steven would be on the air. They’d cancelled the Monday morning catch-up for two reasons – the first one to allow Mats and Steven some time to get over their trip and the second, considered to be far more important, to let the listener tension and expectation build up.

Dave waved to catch his eye.

‘Mats and Steven are on the line.’

‘Patch them through for their warm up before we go live after the ad…’

A second later, using his most jovial tone of voice, Marky enquired quickly on their wellbeing before hitting the button that would open up the conversation to their growing army of listeners.
