Here in California we are used to occasional earthquakes and most of the time they pass by unnoticed. We are warned to prepare for the “big one,” that massive earthquake that forecasters tell us is coming. I remember chatting with my mother in 1989 when the Loma Prieta quake hit during the World Series between the San Francisco Giants and the Oakland A’s. Measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale, it lasted only 15 to 20 seconds, but what an impact those seconds made. The quake killed 62 people, caused billions of dollars in property damage and resulted in 22 structural fires and the collapse of buildings and a span of the Bay Bridge.

My mother and I ran into the front yard and saw the street rolling and pitching like waves on the ocean. I remember thinking how much power I was witnessing at that very moment, and how powerless I was in the face of such a massive display.

We know that God is mighty, a world maker and a destroyer at times. Yet His incredible power is balanced by the care and attention He gives to His people, weak and fragile though we are. I hope you enjoy this story about two people discovering that their strength and ability to survive life’s disasters comes from the Lord. Yes, the whole earth may quake, but we are still cradled in the palm of One who loves us without measure.
