CHAPTER EIGHT

“I’ve got another load of tables, missy.”

Erica looked up from her clipboard to see Clem standing before her in the pole barn on Saturday morning, a week after Thanksgiving. His coat was open, revealing a red flannel shirt tucked into jeans. His weathered face and gleaming eyes were all business. She and Dalton had worked late all week planning and organizing the Christmas event. She’d called the legacy club about helping with the initial setup today, and several members had stopped by to lend a hand.

“Thanks, Clem.” She gave him a big smile. “Dalton, Marc, Cade and Ty should be outside. They’ll unload them for you.”

“That Zane woman is driving me bonkers.” He hadn’t moved a muscle. “She calls two, three times a week with harebrained ideas. Do you know what the latest one is?”

“No.” Erica prepared herself for the unimaginable.

“Shakespearean theater. In the park.” He didn’t so much as blink.

“Oh, my.” She scrunched her nose. That was a bit much. “What did you tell her?”

“This is Wyoming, not England, and no one here is going to dress up in tights. We don’t have a place to do it, anyhow.”

“Did she back off?” She lowered her arm to her side, the clipboard still in hand.

“No. She then got the bright idea that we needed an auditorium. To move the Shakespeare doohickey indoors.” He ran his tongue over his teeth. “I can’t have her on my committee anymore. You take her.”

No way. Erica sympathized with Clem—really, she did—but she was not taking Angela off his hands.

“As I mentioned before, Mary keeps me busy enough.”

“She can’t be as bad as Angela.”

“Oh, you’d be surprised.” Erica scanned the area to make sure no one was eavesdropping. Most of the helpers had left since they were almost finished with the setup. “Here are the calls I’ve gotten. Dog park. Poetry club. Permanent equipment to make kettle corn in the park—I mean, really? Who would operate it? It can’t be safe. Let’s see, what else? Zip lines linking the abandoned buildings at the old tool-and-die company. As you can see, my hands, too, are full.”

“I see your point.” He ran two fingers along the rim of his hat. “Maybe they could be their own committee. Just the two of them.”

“I thought of that, but last year Mary accused Angela of stealing her angel-food-cake recipe, and Angela told her she’d never steal a recipe for a cake that didn’t even taste good, and, well, you can see the problem.”

“Fine.” Clem glowered at her. “I’ll go find that man of yours.”

Man of hers? “He’s my manager, not my man.”

“Whatever you say, missy.” Clem was already walking away.

She turned her attention back to the clipboard. They’d borrowed every table from town they could, and she’d purchased more to be delivered on Wednesday. The Christmas trees were in stands, thanks to Sam and Johnny Abbot, who’d gravitated to each other on account of being distant relatives.

Eight trees in all. And they all needed decorations. And lights. Lots of lights.
