Thirty minutes later, Austin’s head reeled. Four times now, Cassie had shown him how to use the software and various spreadsheets and how to convert data into graphs. He still had no clue how to do any of it. Honestly, he couldn’t even figure out how to open the program she was using.

Cassie wasn’t just out of his league in the age and beauty department; she was out of his league in the smarts department, too.

“How did you know to do all this?” he asked, shutting the laptop before she made him find the program on his own...again. They sat next to each other at the kitchen table, and he was uncomfortably aware of the faint scent of her perfume. He should scoot away. Then he wouldn’t do something stupid. Like touch her hand or...

“I learned it in college. And what I didn’t know, I found out from my classmates. There’s nothing like looming failure to motivate you.” She pushed her chair back, angling it to face him.

“Looming failure, huh?” He doubted she’d ever faced failure. She was too resourceful, too plucky.

“Yeah.” A faint smile lifted her lips. “I walked into my accounting class and almost ran out before the end of the first session. The professor was telling us to graph our homework, and I didn’t even own the software she was using. The only thing keeping me from dropping the class was knowing it was required for my major.”

“You didn’t drop the class?” Her animation soothed him. She looked happy and bright...and impossibly tempting.

“No, I slogged through it. It helped that the library had drop-in study hours where tutors would help you with your homework. One of the guys was a year ahead of me and showed me the ins and outs of creating spreadsheets. It took several sessions, but eventually I got pretty good at it.”

“I’d say.” He gestured to the laptop. “This is way over my head. I think it would take me several weeks to learn all this, not several sessions.”

“You’re close, though.” She placed her hand on his arm. His skin tingled at her touch. “You already know how to switch through the different files.”

He didn’t respond because if he told her the truth—that without her around, he had no idea how to get into the files—she’d insist on showing him one more time. He doubted it would make sense even after ten more times.

The past half an hour had convinced him to stick to his own way of record-keeping.

Besides, his method worked. He understood it. He was good at it. And he knew how to find anything based on what ledger the information was written in.

But he wouldn’t tell Cassie all that. Not when she’d put in so much effort to modernize his records.

“If nothing else, I learned my way around a computer.” She moved to stand. “Now that everything’s done online, it’s made my job search easier.”

He couldn’t imagine having to find a job online. Couldn’t imagine having to find a job at all.
