CHAPTER EIGHT

Parker stood next to Matthew, both of them watching as Faith kicked her tiny legs and protested the hands of the pediatrician as he did a careful examination. Parker wanted to hold her, to keep her safe forever. She sensed the same feelings from Matthew, though she doubted he would admit to such strong sentiment.

Her gaze lifted to the calendar on the wall. It was the first Friday in May. Faith had been in the hospital for two weeks. All of their lives had changed in the days since finding her in the bed of Matthew’s truck.

Two weeks ago, she wouldn’t have considered extending her time in Sunset Ridge. She had wanted to avoid Matthew at all costs because she knew what time with him would mean to her heart, her emotions.

“She’s gained weight,” the doctor told them, and then he turned to the caseworker, Jackie. “She’s doing well and she’s ready for a home. I’m thinking by Monday she’ll be ready to leave us. I’m assuming no news on family or the mother?”

Jackie shook her head. “Nothing. No one has reported her missing, or a missing young woman who might have been pregnant.”

Dr. Finley looked from Faith to Parker. “Parker, this is a big undertaking. Even if only temporarily.”

“I’m aware.” She continued to watch Faith. The baby now followed them with serious dark eyes. “Can I please hold her?”

“I don’t see why not.” Dr. Finley motioned for her to do as she pleased. She swaddled the baby and lifted her from the bed, turning as she did so that she faced Matthew.

He looked half in love. With the baby of course. He also looked scared to death. She didn’t want him to feel cornered, as if he had to do this for her. She should tell him that, but not with Jackie and Dr. Finley there to witness the discussion.

Dr. Finley watched, approval in his eyes. “You managed to get a few days off at the first of the week so she can get settled in, and you can adjust to the new schedule.”

“I did. I went shopping and bought what I thought we would need for a temporary stay. I’m a little nervous, but I think I can do this. With Matthew’s help.”

“It’s a big undertaking,” Jackie acknowledged. “I know you’re nervous about how this will go. You’re going to be great, though.”

Parker closed her eyes, thinking of her verse for the day that had popped up on her phone as she drank her morning coffee. Proverbs 3:5-6. Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.

She was still unsure, but at this moment she had to consider that Faith hadn’t crossed her path by accident. In accepting that, she also accepted that God had put her on this path with Matthew. For whatever reason, He’d brought them here for this moment in their lives. Possibly for this baby. Temporarily.
