Back at the main house a short time later, Mrs. Roberta fed them tacos before they adjourned to the living room where the triplets entertained Ryder and Paisley and had them laughing.

Bowie had to admit, the afternoon had been nearly perfect.

Regardless of the contract pecking at the back of his brain, regardless of his vow to maintain a distance from Sage, he’d enjoyed today.

He feared he might be losing ground in his battle to hold her at arm’s length.

“You still want to see my workshop?” He shouldn’t have said that, shouldn’t have urged her to stay any longer, but he wanted her to.

Foolish heart, don’t do this to me.

“Absolutely. A peek anyway. We have to get home soon.” She glanced at Paisley. The little girl sat on a rug, staring at her brother and the triplets, unmoving, too tired to play anymore.

“His shop’s cool, Aunt Sage.” Ryder hopped up from playing cars with Ben and Caden. “Bowie makes wallets!”

“Super cool. Let’s go have a look.”

A few minutes later, they were in the shop. Ryder, behaving as if he’d been there a dozen times instead of as a stowaway only once, marched up to a worktable.

He turned to Bowie. “Where’s the wallet?”

“Finished.” Bowie reached up to a shelf above the worktable and took down a shoebox. “Here it is. What do you think?”

“Wow.” Ryder traced a finger over an intricate horse head design. “He looks real.”

Inside the shoebox were a few more completed pieces he’d promised to friends.

Now that these items were finished, he could fully concentrate on the designs for PJ Enterprises.

Though he’d drawn and cut out two projects for the contract, he kept those out of sight in a special container, waiting to find the time to tool the designs.

Those had been on his original agenda for today.

“He’s supposed to look real.” Bowie set the box on a low table so Sage and the children could look. He rarely let anyone see his work until it was finished. It was just a quirk he had, especially now that he’d committed to creating something special and new.

The horse head wallet, modeled after the photo of the purchaser’s own horse, was joined by a belt braided along the edges and inset with turquoise and silver, three bracelet sets, a watchband similar to his, and an engraved dog collar.

“They’re beautiful, Bowie. What will you do with them?”

“I made these for a friend in Colorado. Christmas gifts for his family.” He could have reneged on the promised gifts. Jim would have understood considering he was the one who’d recommended Bowie to Katherine Pembroke, but reneging wasn’t his way. A man, as he’d told Ryder, was only as good as his word.

“Including the dog?”

He grinned. “Even Butch, the boxer.”

“I had no idea you were this good. These are exquisite. The detail...” She practically breathed the final words.

Her comment gratified him every bit as much as Katherine Pembroke’s praise and the amount of money he was hoping to earn. He smiled, but said nothing.
