The crowd cheered as Olivia and I made our grand exit. My hand was firmly on Oliviaâs lower back as I guided her out of the venue. Our guests were lined on either side of us, waving sparklers in the air. The car that Iâd hired was waiting just outside the entrance. He held the door for us as I held Oliviaâs hand, assisting her as she climbed in the back, then got in after her.
When the door shut, I realized this was the first moment weâd had alone the entire day. I turned toward her. She was staring straight ahead. I could see the pulse point on the side of her neck beating visibly. Iâd noticed it at the altar as well. I wondered if it was something that happened to her when she was nervous.
The driver got into the front, but there was a privacy screen between us, so he couldnât hear or see anything in the back.
As the car pulled away from the curb, I opened my mouth to ask how she was, but instead of the question Iâd planned on posing, a statement came out. âYou look so fucking beautiful.â
Iâd told her about a hundred times today. I never planned on saying it. I just couldnât seem to stop myself.
Her eyes sliced toward me. âThereâs no one here. You donât have to keep saying that.â
âI wasnât saying it for anyoneâs benefit. I was just stating a fact.â
I could feel the tension between us. Tension that hadnât been there before. I wasnât sure if it was because weâd actually gone through with our crazy plan or if it was the kiss weâd shared at the altar. Or if it was all the other kisses weâd shared tonight. I couldnât count the number of times Iâd kissed her. Each time the guests clinked their glasses, on the dance floor, and basically any time I could sneak one. I took full advantage of our PDA clause.
Now that we were alone, I knew that was off the table.
Her phone rang and she closed her eyes before answering it.
âHi, Mom.â
Sheâd mentioned that she was out of the country and most likely wouldnât be attending, but I didnât know the backstory. Iâd told her I didnât think my father would be there either but didnât go into more detail than that.
âIt was good. Yeah, we just left the reception.â
I glanced over at her and saw her left eye was twitching.
âNo,â she said flatly.
Her shoulders tensed.
She sighed. âBecause I have to work, Mom. We can take a honeymoon later.â
We hadnât actually discussed a honeymoon, but from Oliviaâs workload, even if we were a âreal coupleâ I doubted she would have been able to get away.
Her posture stiffened. âYes, Iâm still going to work. I have a career. I gotta go, Mom.â
Olivia hung up her phone and placed it back in her small white purse.
I wanted to ask if she was okay but before I could the car stopped in front of the Ritz Carlton.
