"Lauren, you’re one of the nicest, funniest, sweetest people I know, but you’re punching way above your weight, my dear. There’s no way on this planet that Sexy Steve will go out with you, let alone notice you. He's the sort of guy who only dates supermodels."

Lauren sighed and tore her gaze away from the beefcake she had been ogling.

The group of firemen were now making their way back to the fire engine outside the boutique. They had been invited by the shop owner to talk about the importance of fire drills and being fire aware, especially given the price of some of the designer outfits in the store. The owners didn't want any careless mistakes, unattended irons or half-finished cigarettes sending the place up in flames.

"He's going to notice me," said Lauren gritting her teeth. "I’m going to get him to notice me, and then I'm going to get him to ask me out!"

Sophie laughed. "Sorry, sweets, but I can't see how you're going to manage that. Let's look at the evidence. He's a thirty-something single guy who works out. He has washboard abs and pecs to make any woman swoon, looks like an Adonis, clearly knows he’s a dish and hangs about with other gorgeous men putting out fires during the week or playing football at weekends. He has dated Celia Allthrop, who, as we know, is the most beautiful woman in the whole town, and is minted. She lasted two dates. He went out for a drink with Tara Durrant, who owns a racehorse and whose father is a multi-millionaire. She has the largest boobs in the town and probably the whole of the UK. She lasted one date. He has snogged all the good-looking girls from Dressed to Kill, our rival dress boutique across town, and has done more than that with those two stunning hairdressers from Hair We Go salon. Based on those facts, I deduce he's a love-'em-and-leave-'em guy, who has little time for anyone over five foot six inches, larger than a size eight and with anything less than forty-G-sized boobs.”

Lauren looked at her own thirty-four-B-sized breasts, drew herself up to her full height of five foot ten, balanced carefully on her six-inch heels and declared, "Then I shall be a challenge!"

Lauren and Sophie had been working together at the top designer boutique for three years. Lauren loved it there. Her passion was for clothes, and she spent all her salary on the latest designs that came through the door. She may have been very tall, flat-chested and, at that moment, sporting a brace to straighten her teeth, which made the other girls call her Ugly Betty, but she always looked good.
