Chapter 12

“This is ridiculous!” Ashton’s older sister was heated at the news of the demise of his relationship with Dominique. “Why do you have a problem with commitment?”

“Me?” Ashton eyed Felicia. This was supposed to be a family dinner after church, not a tribunal on his personal business, requiring a family meeting at his sister’s house.

“Yeah, you.” Bailee, his baby sister, mimicked Felicia.

“One day you’re in a relationship, but you somehow found yourself in some type of stalemate at the barbecue. Now a week later, you’re not in a relationship. C’mon, bro.” Felicia huffed. “The sisters at church don’t appeal to you, and you refuse to entertain some of our girlfriends...I get that, because some aren’t practicing Christians. Bailee took a chance...” She gave their younger sister a side glance. “And everything worked out with Doug. Whew. Good thing, but back to you. All of us want to see you happily married. You seemed to have liked this Dominique woman, but you deprived Bailee and me out of our sisterly rights not to meet her and give our thumbs up or down. You ain’t right, bro.”

Ashton rubbed his knees, ready to bolt, then he would miss out on the chicken lasagna and seven-layer salad his mother had prepared. He didn’t want to verbalize what he had already rehashed in his head after seeing Dominique the week before. She hadn’t responded to his call or text. Maybe he had moved too fast and was blindsided by her pretty face. He looked to his two brothers-in-law for rescue. They just shook their heads. Great, no backup.

“Dinner’s warmed up,” his mother yelled from the kitchen as if dinner was at her house.

“Yes.” Ashton stood first. Saved by the food.

He was spared at the dinner table, but the moment they were finished eating, his sisters’ husbands excused themselves and took the children outside.

“Ash, you are too old to find the love of your life and let her slip away.”

“I never said I was in love.”

Felicia smirked. “You didn’t have to. You’re wearing it on that halfway good looking face of yours. If she is all that, then fight to make her understand why you’ve been a jerk. Then we need to meet her to cast our votes.”

“Excuse me?” He blinked. This was the very reason why he tried to keep his private life secret—his sisters were too opinionated about his choices. He recalled at least two sisters at their church Felicia felt didn’t make the cut.

“Listen, I can’t help you if you don’t tell me what’s wrong.” She frowned.

“I don’t recall asking for help,” Ashton countered.

“Not in so many words, but seriously, talk to us. We love you,” Felicia said in a soft tone that reflected her sincerity.

The love part did him in. There was no denying his sisters had his back. Her expression made him spill his guts about showing up late for dates, then seeing Dominique with another guy.

“All I have to say is you are so wrong for skipping out on those dates.
