My heart is in my throat. We stopped for a quick sandwich. I can’t recall what I ate, only that the food is sitting in my stomach like a rock. I feel physically ill.

“You okay?” Night asks as he parks.

I nod. “I’m nervous but I’m fine.”

“Jacqui is a really great person,” he assures me. “She has no idea who I really am. It’s been quite a few years since I saw her. Contrary to what Bolt said, our thing lasted all of a few weeks. It…” He shrugs. “I can’t say our relationship was nothing but…”

“You don’t have to explain anything to me. We’re friends and you’re trying to help me. I’ll be gone soon.” I’m saying too much. “That’s all.”

“Let’s go.” He gets out of the car.

I unfasten my seatbelt and do the same. It’s a bit of a jump out of the car since he drives a big, fancy SUV. He puts his hand to my back as we walk up to the house. I notice that the paint is peeling. The flowers are long dead, and the grass is overgrown. Guilt wells up in me. It looks like the family living here is struggling to cope. Jacqui is struggling. Why did I never think of giving some of that money to them? I’m such an idiot. I was so buried in my own shit, I couldn’t see the wood for the trees. It’s not too late. I am so grateful for this extra time.

Night looks my way and smiles. His hand presses into my back, like he knows I want to turn and run. I’m not a coward. I lift my chin. I’m done hiding. I need to say my piece. I need to pray that she forgives me. If she doesn’t…I need to be accepting of that. I know what I want to say. I have said the words over and over in my head for a long time. I always planned on this day arriving. I hope it isn’t too soon for her.

Night rings the buzzer. He is standing a little in front of me when the door opens. I’m not expecting to see the person who opens up. I knew that Jacqui would be beautiful, but this woman is a knock-out. She’s older than I am by five or six years. She has a gorgeous smile. The dress she is wearing is lovely. It isn’t ‘in your face’ sexy but shows just enough leg. Her hair is shoulder-length, a manageable style that would suit a busy mother. Her nails are painted. It looks like she does them herself. Probably because she is on a budget.

She is smiling broadly. Her eyes on Night’s. “I couldn’t believe it when you called. I couldn’t! I’m so glad you did.” She throws herself into his arms and hugs him tight, squeezing her eyes shut. She holds him like that for half a minute. So long that I feel like fidgeting. So long that I wonder if I should perhaps leave them.
