Chapter 8
The Longevity Paradox Foods
Imagine that you went to the hardware store, bought some grass seed, spread it out on your lawn, and then just left it there without any water or fertilizer. Obviously, the grass wouldn’t grow. This may seem foolish, but many of my patients make the same mistake, but instead of their lawn, they do it with their microbiome. When they learn how important their gut buddies are to their health and longevity, they go out and buy expensive probiotics, swallow them, and expect their gut buddies to flourish and multiply. But if you don’t fertilize those gut bugs with the foods they like to eat, they will quickly die off just like that grass seed.
To regrow a healthy, robust population of gut buddies, you must fertilize them! One of the many wonderful things about your holobiome is that its population of gut buddies can multiply rapidly. If you’ve read The Plant Paradox, you know that when you choose the foods your gut buddies like to eat, you can dramatically shift the bacterial population in your gut in a matter of days.1 In this chapter, we’ll cover exactly which foods your gut buddies love the most and which ones feed the bad guys. A full list of foods appears in the next chapter, but here we’ll focus on the very favorites of both categories of gut bugs.
