Throughout the month of January, we make three more attempts to peel but spend our day on the icy road instead, backing down without chains. As the Pennsylvania Germans say, âWe grow too soon old, and too late smart!â
Itâs just as well with me, this no work. Itâs wicked cold outside now. Five degrees and high winds. It feels like we live on the Canadian tundra. When we do make it up to the building site, Todd spends a great deal of time in the air in his trees adjusting the skyline. I stand below on the ground freezing, waiting to fetch him things, with a cramp in my neck from looking up. Our house that we live in now doesnât feel much warmer. The loose windowsills rattle. The many panes of floating glass in the sash windows that cover the house on all four sides are in dire need of glazing. Weâre not home long enough to keep our woodstove going. The firebox is small in the cookstove, and the fire goes out in a few hours.
All night long the house grows colder and when weâre gone all day, no heat gets pumped into it at all. The water in my pee bucket freezes overnight in our bedroom. We sleep with the electric blanket on all night long, and an electric bed warmer under our mattress, and cover with a down comforter. We eat our meals positioned right in front of the cookstove when itâs this cold. In fact, we do countless activities by it. I pull the phone cord over when it rings. I take the rocker over when I write and put my feet inside the oven. When I type at my desk, I wrap a wool blanket around my legs, wear down booties on my feet, and sip cup after cup of hot tea to keep my fingers warm. Typing is hell with cold hands.
