ANTIBIOTIC PROS AND CONS

Antibiotic overuse is a real and rapidly expanding problem. Many new livestock owners think, “I’m not going to use antibiotics on my animals.” However, in some cases avoiding antibiotics simply isn’t feasible. If your veterinarian says to use them, keep these tips in mind.

Follow directions to the letter. Inject the recommended dosages, and complete the series as directed, otherwise you’ll kill only weaker pathogens; “supergerms” tend to survive.

Because antibiotics destroy good bacteria as well as bad, it’s best to follow antibiotic treatment with oral probiotics such as Probios or Fastrack (the kinds labeled for ruminants) to restore your llama or alpaca’s digestive system to good health.
