âShe seems healthy,â the vet concluded, âand sheâs got a microchip number, so we should be able to find her real owner on one of the databases soon. Whoever she was stolen from will probably want her back â but that isnât always the case. If she was owned by a criminal, they certainly wonât claim her.â
Then Lizzie showed the vet the photo of the white vanâs number plate and the vet made a note of it and said sheâd report what had happened to the authorities. In the meantime, though, they could take the puppy home. Lizzie secretly hoped that the little Dalmatianâs original owner wouldnât be found. Now she actually had a dog, Lizzie didnât want to lose her. But then she thought about how sheâd feel if it had been her pet that was stolen. Sheâd be devastated and desperate to get it back.
âJust make sure you donât overtire her â twenty minutesâ walking and then a rest,â the vet advised. âLittle and often is best for puppies of this age â especially when we donât know what trauma sheâs been through. Puppies who are kept in cages all the time donât have the chance for their muscles and bones to develop properly.â
Lizzie thought about the other poor dogs still stuck in the van. What about their muscles and bones? What would happen to them?
âPuppy food?â Mum wrote.
âWhich is tastiest?â Dad added and the vet picked a bag of puppy food for them with a smile.
âWhat are you going to call her?â the vet asked Lizzie as they were leaving. âSheâll need a name other than âPuppyâ, even if you only have her for a short while.â
Lizzie lip-read the question, had a think and then signed âLuckyâ. She wrote it down so the vet could see, all the time hoping she was going to be lucky too and that the little dog wouldnât be taken away from her.
The vet smiled and nodded and Lucky wagged her tail as they headed out.
