As with many hobbies, you can find a vast array of tools for keeping plants. Some are super expensive, which you can dream about buying for when you have your urban jungle. I first began my plant gang with just a few key tools, which is everything you need to get started.

To begin gardening indoors, you’ll need a collection of pots and containers in which to grow your plants. Simple plastic or terracotta pots are essential. There is also a lovely range of different ceramic pots out on the market, but check that they have drainage holes, especially if you are growing ferns or plants that need lots of moisture.

Pots are measured across the top, inside the rim, and the diameter is given either in centimetres or inches. I find the most useful sizes are generally 6.5 cm (2½ in), 9 cm (3½ in), 12 cm (4¾ in) and 18 cm (7 in). You may also need a few larger pots for mature plants. You will also need saucers or trays to stand the pots in, so you can water your plants from the bottom and stop pots from dripping all over your beautiful furniture. You can put a pot with drainage holes inside another decorative container that does not have holes to catch water, but make sure you always check that the plant is not left standing in water. Whether you have watered the plant from the top or bottom, lift the inner pot out after an hour and discard any water still left in the bottom. Leaving a plant stood in water for long periods of time is an easy and common way to kill it – you willl cause the roots to rot. If in doubt, it’s better to underwater your plants! Finally, you need a mister to spritz your plants, which is great to increase humidity.
