Chapter Thirteen

Two days had passed since Daisy and Amelia’s news. Two days that had been awkward in the extreme for Sera. She needed Bhal to help with her addiction, but they’d exchanged few words since their argument when they got home from the club.

Sera was not feeling good. She was keeping some blood down but not much, and she hadn’t ventured back to the blood room.

This evening Sera had her water fix from Bhal two hours ago, but the clawing inside was starting to come back. There was no way she was going to see Bhal again, so she put the light off and tried to get to sleep.

She wasn’t tired. Sera tried to remember that Celtic myth story that Bhal told her. The race of beings that came in ships in the sky. The Tuatha De Danann with their magical weapons, the one that had soothed and sent her sleep.

The spear that shot fire-bolts, the shield that would repel any bow, the axe that—

Wait a second.

Sera sat bolt upright. Something niggled in her brain. Bhal had described the story as one her mother told her, but there was one her own mother had told her as a child. A folktale, one of the many from a book read to her about the other paranormal creatures that inhabited their land.

“The wolves.”

Sera turned the light on and grabbed her iPad from the bedside cabinet. She first looked up the myth of the Tuatha De Danann. She read it all through as quickly as she could, then put her iPad down and went over to her cupboard.

She dropped to her knees and pulled out a box of childhood memories—toys, keepsakes, and books. Her dad had commissioned this one for Sera’s birthday.

Sera flicked through the pages. It contained fables and stories handed down to each generation about vampires, witches, werewolves, shapeshifters, and the fae. She came to the page about the werewolf packs and traced her fingers over the gorgeous illustrations of wolves and their clan emblems.

Sera thought through all the swirling thoughts in her head. Balor. The void. Melusine’s mother was Balor’s sister…

“That’s it, that’s it!” Sera had a rush of excitement. She had to talk to Bhal. Before she did, Sera took a picture of the illustration in her book.

Sera didn’t want to go to Byron if this was a stupid idea.

Her heart was racing fast. This could be the answer, and she had to get this out of her head. She couldn’t remember being so excited or energized in a long, long, long time.

She left her room and walked along to Bhal’s. Sera knocked at the door, and Bhal soon opened up. “Sera? Do you need more—”

“No, no—well, maybe—but can I talk to you about something?”

“Always. Come in,” Bhal said.

Once Sera got in she started to feel nervous. What is this sounded ridiculous out loud? “Can you sit down and hear me out?”

Bhal took a seat in the armchair in front of her bed, and Sera started pacing.

“Are you sure there isn’t something wrong, Sera? You seem worried.
