A mother’s tale

Lois

Lois is a mother of two children with autism. She attended the autism course at the University of Cumbria, and many of the themes in this chapter were first included in one of her assignments. She subsequently lectured on the ‘parent perspective’. She thinks that autism runs in her family. Her ‘egg mayonnaise on the fur coat of a busybody’ story, described below, is one of my favourites!

This chapter is a transcript of a conversation between us. She thinks that she might also have autism but will probably not bother to seek a diagnosis. Her accounts of battles with professionals and day-to-day survival were the subject of her essay. She commonly experiences strangers making comments about her children. Here she describes what happened on a visit to a café:

“Harry was making quite loud noises and singing ‘Away in a Manger’, which he had been singing at nursery. The man then started singing along but Harry saw this as an opportunity to sing louder and louder. He would not stop, which then agitated the man, who said things like ‘Oh, he probably gets away with everything at home’ and ‘He’s not disciplined.’ The people with him were in agreement. I didn’t say anything but I could feel myself bubbling inside.”
