Sources of Funding for STEAM and Makerspace Programs
Librarians have turned to organizations and companies such as Code.org and LEGO to obtain training and resources for STEAM and makerspace programs. Following are some places to look.
Code.org has provided professional development to librarians in the past through the Regional Education Service Centers located throughout the state of Texas. Visit the website to see available options: bit.ly/3CTmevz. Librarians can also sign up to learn how they can teach computer science skills to students.
LEGO Education partners with school districts to provide supplies and professional development to librarians who wish to use LEGO in their makerspaces. See funding opportunities on their website: bit.ly/3ImH2Na
As part of its strategic goals, the Institute of Museum and Library Services seeks to champion lifelong learning and strengthen community engagement. Search for grant opportunities and how to apply on their website: imls.gov/grants/grant-programs.
Professional organizations are also a valuable resource for professional development and training on STEAM and makerspace programs. Librarians across the country attend ISTE conferences and professional development offerings to keep pace with trends in technology instruction and makerspace innovations.
In addition to ISTE, state professional organizations are also excellent sources for STEAM and makerspace program ideas. In Texas, many librarians attend the Texas Computer Education Association annual conference, along with their workshops and district meetings, to gain certifications and learn about the latest in tech they can bring back to their campuses in the form of programming, as well as in instruction, library management, and more.
