I once explained my faith journey to a friend of mine. While I was baptized Presbyterian, I stopped practicing the faith by the time I was in high school. While I believed in Truth, I thought it more important to learn about this Truth than it was to shackle it to some clever definition.

“I see,” she said. “You were a seeker.” I liked the sound of that.

St. Justin was a seeker too. He studied the great philosophies of his time—Stoicism, Pythagoreanism, and Platonism—to understand what it meant to be happy. But it wasn’t until he learned about Christ that he found happiness.

Like Justin, I tried to find happiness by studying many different philosophies. But it wasn’t until I met my wife and witnessed how she celebrated her Catholic faith that I learned the language necessary to describe what I had been searching for: faith, hope, and love.

My pilgrimage was similar to Justin’s, and as I grow in my faith—that is, the more I let God be God—I am beginning to see it less as a journey from point A to point B.

Rather, I see my pilgrimage as a scavenger hunt where I discover God in all things.
