Q – Gonzalo Quesada

NOT MANY ARGENTINEANS HOLD World Cup records but prolific goal-kicker Gonzalo Quesada is certainly an exception, scoring an impressive 102 points at the 1999 World Cup, one more than the nearest player, Matt Burke. Quesada’s impressive kicking display was one of the main reasons for Argentina’s breakthrough in 1999, as they made the quarter-finals for the first time. And Quesada’s achievement is all the more remarkable considering the fact that Burke’s Australia stayed in for an additional two rounds. In 1999 Quesada – who won 36 caps for The Pumas – raised a few eyebrows as he rejected the use of a kicking tee, instead opting for sand to play the ball on.

“Each time I am using a tee, I feel I am limiting my possibility to give the ball the orientation that I want,” said Quesada, who also scored 33 points at the 2003 World Cup, before retiring from Test rugby after that tournament. “With the sand I can mould my support how I want and choose my height with more or less sand. Each time I have used a tee I have missed my kick, but I will continue to train with them, if others can manage to do it. Why not me?”
