“Ginny, I’m at the hospital. It’s Aunt Margaret. She’s taken a turn for the worse.”

“No! Oh, no, Beemer, not while I’m gone. I need to be there with her.” Ginny felt weak, as if all the blood had drained from her head.

“I heard her cry out a little after midnight. I rushed into her room and found her lying on the floor by her bed, unconscious. It looked as if she’d tried to get up and then fell. She must’ve hit her head on the nightstand. There was blood everywhere. I called 911, and they got there really fast. Ginny, I was afraid she was already dead.”

His voice was so shaky it scared her. “Oh, Beemer, this can’t be happening. Are you with her now?”

“No, the doctors are examining her. They won’t let me in. I’m going crazy waiting out here in the hall, wondering what’s going on in there. Pray, Ginny—pray she’ll make it.”

“I’m coming, Beemer.” She glanced at her watch. “I should be there by six thirty. You’re at the medical center?”

“Yes, but, Ginny, maybe you’d better fly. You’re in no condition to drive. Why don’t you check to see if there’s a red-eye from St. Louis to—”

“Hendersonville? Not likely. I’d probably have to fly into Nashville and take a cab the rest of the way. I can drive to Hendersonville faster than that.”

“Drive carefully. Make sure you have your seat belt fastened and lock your doors. You have plenty of gas?”

“I filled up as soon as I got here.” Her heart pounded fiercely. “I’ll be out of here in five minutes.”

“What about that sworn statement?”

“Right now that’s the least of my worries. I’ll call the attorney. It’ll have to wait. Under the circumstances I’m sure they’ll understand. I’ll have my cell phone turned on so call me, please, if you hear anything. Anything at all. Okay?”

“You know I will. I’ll—I’ll be waiting.”

She told him a hurried good-bye, then while sending a quick prayer to the Lord begging Him to be with her aunt, rushed into her bedroom to dress. She had to get to Aunt Margaret as soon as possible.

Though Beemer called her at least once an hour during her long drive, he had nothing more to tell her, other than the fact that they had moved their aunt to an intensive care unit and she was still alive.

“I’ve been praying God would be with her and spare her life, Beemer,” she told him, tears rolling down her cheeks the last time he phoned her. “I love her so much. Other than you, she’s my last living relative.”

“I know. She’s my last living relative that I know of. Though we’ve never heard from them, who knows, my real mother and father may still be alive. Someday I’d like to try to find out who I really am.”

“Maybe when all this is over I can help you find them.” His words and the sadness in his voice broke her heart. What a tragedy for a young boy to experience.
