partially overlap, is mainly a question of classism (see Joyce (ed.) 1995), whereas conflict 1 is a question of at least colonialism, imperialism, and neocolonialism.

Racism (see, e.g., Banton 1987, Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies 1982, Cox 1970, Donald & Rattansi (eds) 1992, Gilroy 1987, Miles 1989, Rex 1986, Rex & Mason 1986, Solomos 1989) is an element in several of the conflicts, most brutally in conflicts 2 and 1, but to a high degree in the conflict between majorities and minorities too, conflict 6. ‘Imperialism … has been about racial domination as much as about who has economic and political power’ (Savory 1995:244). Here too, over and above brutal biologically argued racism (Miles 1989), it is often a question of more sophisticated forms of racism, culturally/ethnically argued racism, ethnicism (Mullard 1984, 1985, 1986a, 1988; see also Hutchinson & Smith (eds) 1996) and linguicism.

To me it is significant that we do not have a word for the -ism where inequality is based on formal education. Many concepts are the special field of intellectuals—we live off producing concepts and analyses, knowledge. This means that we to some extent get our unequal share of power and resources on the basis of this capacity. In Britain and many other countries the type (‘public school boy’) and level of formal education correlate closely with class, but ‘educationism’ is more than, and different from classism. We have created concepts for analysing those characteristics on the basis of which others get more than their share, but we make invisible the one which we ourselves profit from. Reader, find a name for this -ism! Educationism? Intellectualism?
