Why Speed Is Out And Flexibility Is In!

INCORRECT IDEAS, faulty methods, and false assumptions restrict learning potential in so many ways. The good news is that we now have the science and a wealth of proven contrasting approaches that unlock learning and potential. We have discussed two of the major damaging myths—the idea that brains are fixed and that struggle is a sign of weakness. When people let go of these faulty ideas, they change in profound and generative ways.

This chapter deals with another harmful myth and offers its liberating counterpart—the idea that to be good at math or any other subject, you need to be a fast thinker. When we let go of the idea that speed is important and approach learning as a space for deep and flexible thinking, it enables a breakthrough in the ways we encounter the world. Creative and flexible thinking is the kind employed by “trailblazers” in their fields,1 as I mentioned in the last chapter, and is available to us when we approach knowledge with a new perspective.
