“I think she actually likes the harness,” Charles said as they headed for the beach.

Lily was still excited. She bounded out in front of Charles and Milo, but with the harness on, she didn’t tug as much at the leash. She didn’t try to dart off this way and that and smell every single smell. It was a small change, but it made Charles feel optimistic. With some help, Lily could definitely grow into a well-behaved dog.

As they walked on the boardwalk through the dunes and neared the beach, the sound of the ocean grew louder. Charles heard shouts and laughter, too. He spotted a family: parents and three kids on the beach. They were chasing a giant orange beach ball, kicking it and tossing it all over the place.

Lily barked. Her bright eyes followed the ball. Her ears perked up. She wagged her tail at super speed.
