Chapter 10

Delivering Long-Day Lighting – Technology Options and Costs

By Erik Runkle and A.J. Both

P hotoperiodism refers to how plants respond to the duration of the light (day) and dark (night) periods during a 24-hour time interval, as discussed in Chapter 4. In the production of many floriculture crops, flowering time and plant quality need to be controlled to reach target sales dates, regardless of the natural light conditions, and one way to accomplish this is to regulate daylength. For commercial production, daylength can be shortened using blackout cloth or extended using photoperiodic lighting to create long days. This chapter focuses on different methods of delivering long-day lighting.
