We Are the Seed and the Sowers

While God is working in our lives, part of our growth is learning that we are not only the soil, but we are also called to be the sowers. Followers of Jesus Christ discover that they are called to scatter the seed of the good news of Jesus Christ freely and generously. We need to sow the seed everywhere we go, because we never know what soil is prepared and ready.

Many of us have worked, prayed, loved, and scattered seed faithfully, yet we have not seen the harvest we would have wanted. We have reached out to family or friends and invited them to church or shared our testimony or even had a chance to tell them the story of God’s love given in Jesus Christ. But, as far as we can tell, nothing seems to be happening. In time, a part of us starts to think that either we did something wrong or that God is not keeping up his part of the deal.

This parable reminds us that not all soil is ready to receive God’s seed. The sower can spread the seed freely, and the seed is ready to do its work, but not all of the soil is soft, deep, or free of weeds. Jesus wants us to remember that our part is only to sow the seed. Our job is not to make growth happen; only God can do that. We don’t have to understand how it all works; we just need to sow the seed and let God do his work.
