Lies come in many forms. There are straight up deceptions. There are lies of omission. There are lies of ignorance. There are lies that seem insignificant. But in our business lies are deadly. We were often called in to help companies overcome the effects of lies that had brought them down.

One evening I met a client for dinner. When his food arrived, he began to put large amounts of salt on it before he had even tasted it. I realized that this was a person who had no time for research, data or alternatives. He was a person of impulse who had been lucky in his career, until he wasn’t lucky anymore. I knew that his company was in serious danger with him at the helm, and I told him so. He was not pleased but his business was in peril of collapsing, so he listened to what I had to say. I told him that he needed to hand over strategic planning to others in the company, who could sharpen the pencil and analyze their ‘real’ options. We got the job done, and he was promoted to Chairman of the Board. He did ask me to suggest a Board of Advisors who could keep him abreast of the issues that created the greatest risks to the future viability of the company. Out of that process, I suggested that they seek out a friendly buyer for the corporation. They did, and the companies were sold for a very handsome profit, and all the execs received enough compensation to retire comfortably. If this executive had continued on the course that he was going in the beginning, thousands of people would have lost their livelihood. I could sadly tell you about several others that were destroyed by a head exec, just like this one.

Movers

When my wife and I had a major move, big enough for a moving van, we were all excited about moving to our new home. An hour after we got on the road, we got a call from a friend back in the community from which we were moving. “You should know that your moving van ran over the curb going through town and we could hear all your stuff tumbling around in the van!” When we got to our new home about six hours away, the van pulled up, and we asked them if there had been any problems. They said NO! When the movers opened the side door of the van, we could see smashed furniture, lamps, and broken boxes. Their next move was well choreographed! “You’re going to have to sign a release on any potential damage, or we’ll have to come back next week with your stuff.” My wife was nine months pregnant and we were exhausted. We signed. This actually nullified any claim of insurance that might have been due to us. Our daughter was born two days later, so we sort of forgot all about it. Let’s just say that the moving company is still not a name that should be brought up in our house.
