Chapter 15
Nadi
Maneuvering around with a broken heart? Something I would never recommend. I could remember how heavy I felt when my dad died. I didnât think Iâd ever feel anything near to it again. But there I was, sulking in my bedroom under the covers and looking at the same four walls. The only thing Iâd found the strength to do was shower and then climb right back into bed.
With Kelz, there was never an escape plan. Once we got together, I never even toyed with the thought of experiencing a day without him again. I loved him. Even in my anger, I loved him. And that was why I was so sad.
I stopped thinking about why he did what he did. Money messed with peopleâs heads in the worst ways. It wasnât an excuse; it was the truth. Money was more important to him than me, and it was something I forced myself to swallow early on. I was allowing myself to feel what I needed to feel so I could move on with my life.
I didnât know what I wanted to do. I could go back to school or start a business, but I would need to put more thought into it. What I really needed to do was take a trip to clear my mind. One filled with serene views and feels. I could picture myself being gone for a month or two before returning home. I grabbed my phone from the nightstand to check my account balance. I hadnât looked at it since right before Kelz and I did our drop-off to Daugherty. I expected to see three commas due to the last jobs I partook in, but the number looking back at me made me suddenly sit up in anguish.
âTwo hundred thousand dollars?â I said out loud, looking down at my phone.
I checked my incoming transfers because the account should have had well over a million dollars. There were no transfers or recent deposit transactions. My blood began to boil. I could have attributed things to Kelz just forgetting to send my money, but no. He had never failed to do it before. I couldnât believe him. First, he crossed me, only to turn around and do it again by stealing from me. I jumped up from my bed. It would have been easy to make a phone call, but something like that needed to be discussed face-to-face. I hurried to throw some clothes on and brush my hair into a ponytail. After grabbing my keys, I was about to leave, but my bedroom door swung open. Nori poked her head in and looked surprised to see me out of bed.
âWhere you going?â she asked, seeing the keys in my hand.
âJust out to get some fresh air,â I answered.
âOh yeah? Let me throw on my shoes. Iâll come with.â
âNo, I want to go alone.â
I brushed past her and walked to the front door with her on my heels. She watched closely as I grabbed my purse and sunglasses from the island.
