Recovery means letting your body settle at its natural shape. Everybody’s natural shape is different: you may be naturally slim or naturally curvy, and either is just fine, if your body’s happy. Remember, also, that your natural shape changes over time: as we age our bodies naturally change, and that’s okay too.

Do a little detective work to discover your natural shape. Think how your body looked before your eating disorder, and how it responds now to weight loss/gain. You probably have a pretty good idea of what your body would look like if you allowed it to settle. Feelings of fear and revulsion may come up. Ask yourself what’s holding you back from working with rather than against your body?

One day, when you’re ready, you can accept and even like your body as it is. And when you leave that spring alone, you’ll find it’s not just your body that’s relaxed and happy and in balance, it’s the you inside as well.

Appreciating your body

Do you take your body for granted? Do you really appreciate just how intricate and clever your body is, and how much it does for you?

Think about all the things your body lets you do:

Cry salty, purging tears

Dance, swim, run, twirl, jump, stretch, lift

For women, conceive, carry and feed a baby

For men, make sperm to create a son or daughter

Hear birdsong, waves lapping on a beach, a child’s giggle

Kiss and caress, and feel a lover’s touch

See rainbows, sunsets, stars, smiles, snow

Sing, shout, hum, laugh, talk, share

Smell autumnal bonfires, freshly mown grass, calming lavender
