Using the SCARF Model to Make Feedback Less Threatening

One useful model for identifying how to reduce the perceived threat in a coaching conversation is what’s known as the SCARF model. It was developed by David Rock and his colleagues at the NeuroLeadership Institute. SCARF is an acronym that stands for Status, Certainty, Autonomy, Relatedness, and Fairness.

Status refers to your sense of importance relative to your peers.

Certainty is your clarity about how the future will unfold.

Autonomy is your sense of control over events that are unfolding, now or in the future.

Relatedness is your connection and sense of safety around others, whether you see your colleagues as friends or foes.

Fairness is your perception of an interaction as just and unbiased.
