Chapter Fifteen

Evan

I can’t stop smiling as I stand in Emily’s kitchen making her breakfast. I woke up over an hour ago and simply held her in my arms for the longest time before I finally got out of bed. She felt too good—smelled too good—to let go of her.

As much as I want to, I can’t stay in bed with her all morning. We both have to work today. Plus, Roxie needs her morning walk. My neighbor, who often walks her when I work long hours or have to go out of town, agreed to make sure she was let out again last night and again this morning. But if I stay away too long, Roxie gets anxious.

Being with Emily is so easy and right I can’t believe I took so long to finally tell her how I feel about her. Years of our lives were wasted, worrying about what her brother will do to me if I touch her, date her, or God forbid, marry her.

I don’t give a fuck what he thinks anymore. I close my eyes and think about that for a moment.

That’s not even remotely close to true. I care very much about what he thinks. I don’t want to lose his friendship. I want him to accept that Emily and I are together. I want him to see me as someone worthy of Emily and her love. Emily is too important to me to let her go because of his overprotective nature. I have to believe that with time, he’ll be okay with us being together.

He has to because I’m not giving her up.

The coffee pot beeps, signaling it’s ready, just as I place a couple of slices of bacon in a skillet. It instantly starts sizzling. Whipping the eggs, I take a deep breath. The aroma of bacon and coffee fill my nostrils.

A few moments later, I hear a low moan coming from the bedroom. Nothing can stop the smile that spreads across my face.

“You evil, evil man,” she calls out from her room. I chuckle and flip the bacon before I dump the eggs in another skillet to scramble them up. Emily loves bacon almost as much as she loves tacos.

I already set the table with plates, flatware, a glass of orange juice for each of us, and coffee mugs. The toast is buttered, creamer and sugar on the table for her coffee—another thing I know how she likes it—and the blackberry preserves is next to her plate. Once the bacon and eggs are finished, we’ll be ready to eat.

I hear her get out of bed and rustle around her room. Her apartment is small, and I can hear almost every sound made within these walls. So when she steps up behind me and wraps her arms around my waist, I’m not surprised.

I turn slightly and lean down and kiss the top of her head. “Morning. Did you sleep well?”

“I did.” Her hands slowly rake up my chest as she presses her lips against my bare back.
