That being said, many artificial light sources are available, each with different characteristics. Light bulb manufacturers understand that the temperature of the bulb affects the atmosphere of a room. When you are buying light bulbs, look for two aspects of the light: one, how bright it gets and two, what the temperature of the color is. The temperature of the light can be cool, like natural north light, or warm, like the glow of a candle. Also, consider the brightness of the bulb, whether you want a bright spotlight or one that is gentler. Many artists care deeply about the color of their light source and opt for one that is as close to natural daylight as possible, check the CRI (a color rendering index) label on the bulb, looking for one that’s close to 100. Many shops that sell bulbs will have a display showing or explaining the range of color options available.

When I use artificial light I just buy the bulb I personally like, not necessarily what is theoretically best. I tend to prefer a mixture of warm and cool and will sometimes use two bulbs, or use daylight and shoot other light into it with an additional light source. You’re the artist, you choose the light that gets you excited to start painting.
