“I hear ghosts,” Josh whispered.

“Ghosts don’t make noise,” Ruth Rose said. She dropped her backpack to the ground.

Dink checked out the yard, which was more like an overgrown field than a lawn. It was mostly bushes with thorny branches and brown grass. “I don’t see the drone,” he said.

“Maybe it didn’t land here,” Josh said. “It just looked like it was zooming right over this place.”

“Let’s check around back,” Ruth Rose said.

Behind the house, the yard was more dead grass and wild bushes. The kids stepped over a rotting wooden fence as they walked around the building.

Every window was boarded up. The back door was also covered with plywood.

Small cellar windows close to the ground were caked with dirt and cobwebs. “That’s how the ghosts get in and out,” Josh said, pointing at one of the windows.

“Or there,” Dink said. He pointed to a metal door that seemed to lead to the cellar. A padlocked chain was looped through the door handle.

They saw a small air conditioner in a window, dripping water from one corner.
