The three

kinds of

linear

perspective

Of natural perspective combined with accidental perspective ...... Natural perspective is as follows : among things of equal size, the one farthest away seems smallest, and conversely, the one nearest seems largest, and the diminution is in proportion to the distance.

But accidental perspective give the appearance of unequal size to things of the same (size) painted at different distances (on the wall from the eye), leaving that which is smaller than all the others in the place nearest the eye, and placing the largest at a distance so that is seems smaller than all the others — and all this because of the wall on which the scene is represented, and all the parts of which, in its length, are at unequal distances from the eye ; this diminution of the wall is natural, but the perspective painted on it is accidental, for it does not agree in any way with the true diminution of the said wall ; * hence, if the eye looking at this representation in perspective moves slightly, all the images will appear monstrous to it, which is not the case with the natural perspective defined above, etc. Therefore, we say that the quadrilateral abcd drawn below* is (according to plane perspective) a foreshortened square seen by a spectator placed opposite the center of its base.
