At this point the Philistine rulers called in the priests and diviners to decide what to do with the ark. The priests inform the rulers that they must not only return the ark to the Israelites but also provide guilt offerings to accompany the ark in order to cease the plague of tumors with which YHWH has been afflicting the Philistines. The gift the priests decide would be appropriate is five golden images representing the plagues by which the Philistines were afflicted. The rulers agree to make five golden tumors and five golden mice. Apparently, mice were an additional element of the plagues that affected the Philistines, though no mention of them was made in the narrative. The Philistine priests again bring up a comparison between the Egyptian plague narrative and the present situation.
