is called Middle C, for obvious reasons. It makes a good reference point since it is in the middle of the notation system and approximately in the middle of the piano keyboard. To find it on your piano keyboard, look for the lock or the maker's label, which is at the middle of the keyboard — every piano has one or the other, and some pianos have both. Since we know that the "look" of any C is "a white key just in front of two blacks," we have only to find the example of that pattern which is nearest to the lock or label (usually a little to the left of it), and we'll have not just any C but Middle C. In other words, Middle C is the C which is closest to the center of the piano, but a quick way to find it the first time is to remember that the lock or label is approximately at the center, too. Afterwards, you won't need this artificial aid.

If you see a note written

f

therefore, you know that it is Middle C and you also know which key to play on the piano in order to produce it. Observe that this same note can also be written another way, using the bass clef and writing the middle note above the bass staff,

instead of below the treble one: ^E
