With moving animals, markings can be generalized. Here, the giraffe’s blotches were painted wet in wet, with Burnt Sienna into Yellow Ochre.

Balance of Nature

Watercolour (28 x 38cm/11 x 15in)

The distinctive stripes of the zebra are not uniform. Added wet on dry, they follow the form of the body.

Painting spots

Spotted coats provide excellent camouflage for their owners and are fun to paint for the artist! Ideally, the spots should be applied after the form has been established so they are not disturbed by follow-on washes. Adding them wet into wet will give spots a soft, furry appearance; alternatively, they can be added onto dry paper with dry brush for a rougher look; or as dots from the tip of the brush to make a smooth circumference and more defined spot. Round spots seen from an angle appear elliptical: turn the brush sideways to apply the paint and always follow the direction of the pattern to endorse the form of the body.
