Gay Brook

Oil on canvas (51 x 51cm/20 x 20in)

Gay’s laugh is her signature trait, so her portrait had to show her smile! The teeth are lit on one side and inferred on the other with a subtle exchange of tone between those angled towards the light, and those angled towards shadow.

Jawline, chin and neck

Observe the chin and jaw as a whole, from below the ears, using the neck underneath to help define the shape and contour. The proportions may approximate to a guiding geometric shape, such as a wide triangle, half-oval or half-square. The jaw changes direction at a point in line with the mouth; follow the contour with a combination of straight and curved lines to combine strength with fluidity. Check the width and depth using measurements from the corners of the mouth to the edge of the cheek and downwards from below the lip.

As the chin curves under itself, back to the neck, it shows subtle gradations in tone rather than a hard, linear edge. Look out for reflected light on the shaded side to help delineate the shape against the neck. The chin and jawline can be continuously adjusted during painting, using adjacent features such as neck and hair.
